Potential interview questions to ask candidates during phone screens or interviews.

Prepare the questions you want to ask ahead of time. Listen carefully to what the candidate is saying.

Remember to remain EEOC compliant when interviewing your candidate(s).


  1. How did you find out about this opening?

  2. Can you tell me what attracted you to apply for this position?

  3. How familiar are you with our company and what we do?

  4. Tell me about yourself.

  5. Who is your role model and why?

  6. Why are you looking for a new job?

  7. Describe a typical day at your current job.

  8. Tell me about the goals you were given at your last/current position. How often did you meet or exceed them?

  9. How do you prioritize tasks?

  10. What do you do when priorities change quickly? Give me one example of when this happened.

  11. What skills would you bring to the job?

  12. What is your experience using (insert computer skills / applications)?

  13. Tell me about a challenging client you have worked with and how you handled it.

  14. What are your goals for professional development? How will getting this job help you advance toward your professional development goals?

  15. Do you have any other skills or knowledge that might be helpful but aren’t on your resume?

  16. Give me an example of your most rewarding professional experience.

  17. Describe a situation in which you felt it might be justifiable to break company policy or alter a standard procedure. What did you do?

  18. What have you learned from your mistakes?

  19. How do you respond when you don't know the answer to a question?

  20. If you weren't interviewing for this role, is there another role here you'd be interested in?

  21. If I were to ask your current boss what you do that drives him or her crazy, what would your boss say?

  22. How would you describe your personality?

  23. Describe a situation when you worked with a person whose personality was the opposite of yours. How did you deal with it?

  24. Tell me how you keep your job knowledge current with the ongoing changes in the industry.

  25. What have you done to improve your verbal communication skills?

  26. What have you done to improve your listening skills?

  27. In your current or past positions, what types of decisions do/did you make without consulting your boss?

  28. How do you go about solving problems at work?

  29. Tell me about a decision you made while under a lot of pressure.

  30. Tell me about a time when an upper-level policy change or decision held up your work. How did you respond?

  31. What did you like and dislike about the culture of your last company

  32. How would past co-workers and bosses describe you?

  33. What is your greatest fear about getting this job?

  34. Give me an example of a time when you went beyond your employer’s normal job expectations to get a job done.

  35. What was the biggest challenge you’ve faced in the last job? What was the outcome, and how did you resolve the problem?

  36. What does an ideal workday look like for you?

  37. Do you prefer working with a team, or are you better by yourself?

  38. Have you ever experienced a problem with a team member? How was the situation resolved?

  39. What is the most important thing you learned from your previous positions?

  40. What is your least favorite part of your chosen profession?

  41. How did the best manager you ever had to motivate you to perform well? Why did that method work?

  42. What normally frustrates you most about managers?

  43. What type of work environment do you prefer? Management style?

  44. What separates you from other candidates?

  45. What would your expected salary be for this type of position?

  46. Do you have certain benefits that are important to you? Would it be a deal breaker for you if we don’t offer _____ benefit or the salary figure you quoted?

  47. What can your current/previous employer do to keep you from leaving your role?

  48. If I call your references, what will they say about you?

  49. When could you start working?

  50. Do you have any questions about our company or the position?
